The Shadow of the Ishin Shishi
January 16, 2008From the Southwestern clans of Satsuma, Choshu and Tosa the men of high purpose were revering the emperor and expeling the barbarians. The members of the Ishin Shishi opted for a more violent approach in asserting their views. Killing politicians, fighting the Shinsengumi and burning Kyoto at the height of Gion festival. But a shadow of Ishin Shishi from Mito was responsible of the death of the shogunal grand councilor Ii Naosuke, who was a signatory to treaties that favored foreign nation, and who had placed an underaged boy on the shogunal throne.
